Guide and Tips

There are times when you want to go for a walk on your day off to get rid of your lack of exercise. However, it often happens that the vacation you are planning to go on falls on a rainy day.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some sightseeing spots where you can enjoy walking even on such rainy days.

Sightseeing spots where you can enjoy walking even on a rainy day

Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza (Nagano Prefecture)

First up is an outlet mall located in the town of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture. With a site area of 260,000 square meters, the outlet mall in Karuizawa has many lawns and shaded areas, and even on a rainy day, you can spend a long time walking under the wide eaves without getting wet.

The Otsuka Museum of Art (Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture)

The next museum I will introduce is the Otsuka Museum of Art in Tokushima Prefecture. The Otsuka Museum of Art has more than 1,000 pieces of ceramic reproductions of major western paintings displayed in a building with three underground floors and two above ground floors.

It will take you more than three hours just to walk around the museum building while looking at the artworks.

Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture)

The next museum I would like to introduce is the Dinosaur Museum in Fukui Prefecture. This dinosaur museum is a popular museum with one basement floor to three floors above ground.

Just walking around looking at the 40,000 fossils, dioramas, and other dinosaur exhibits is a good workout.

Lake Biwa Museum (Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture)

The Lake Biwa Museum in Shiga Prefecture is a museum dedicated to Japan’s most ancient lake.

It is so spacious and has so much to offer that you can walk around all day even indoors, including an aquarium where you can see freshwater fish and a discovery room.

Kamo Aquarium (Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture)

The Kamo Aquarium in Yamagata Prefecture is the largest jellyfish aquarium in Japan, which has also recently attracted attention as a specialized aquarium.

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art (Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture)

The Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art, commonly known as the “Millet Museum,” is not very crowded even on weekends, and is a recommended museum where you can walk around slowly while enjoying Millet’s most famous works.

Gotemba Premium Outlets (Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture)

In Shizuoka Prefecture, there is Gotemba Premium Outlets, the largest of its kind in Japan.

The site of Gotemba Premium Outlets is so large that you will walk for more than an hour just to do some window shopping.

In the canyon between the two shopping zones, there is a bridge over which you can see Mt. On rainy days, you will need an umbrella to cross this bridge, but the rest of the time, you can avoid most of the rain by walking along the eaves of the stores (though you may need an umbrella more often during weekends and other crowded times).

Sand Museum (Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture)

Don’t worry if it’s raining and you can’t walk on the dunes! You can take your time to view the sand sculptures indoors at the Sand Museum, located next to the Tottori Sand Dunes.
